Apparatus for cutting and placing limp pieces of material is particularly constructed for positioning the relative placement of two cut pieces. The apparatus employs a slip cut configuration and has an anvil roll (167) with a circumferential groove (210) receiving and guiding a uncut end segment (217) of a web (160) of material to be cut. The groove (210) tapers off to a surface substantially flush with the wheel surface. When the web (160) is cut, the cut piece (82) lies on the flush surface, facilitating transfer of the cut piece (82) to the other cut piece (118).
