A catalyst carrier having a ceramic base containing mainly a ceramic and a precoat layer provided on the surface of the ceramic base, wherein the precoat layer contains not less than 30 (mass %) of titanium oxide (TiO2). A catalyst body produced by loading such a catalyst carrier with a catalyst containing one or both of an alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal. The catalyst carrier is hardly deteriorated by the loaded alkali metal and/or alkaline-earth metal, and the catalyst body has a carrier that is hardly deteriorated by the loaded alkali metal and/or alkaline-earth metal.
