<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium having the satisfied sensitivity and repeated recording property and also capable of recording with the high speed and high density, in the phase transition type optical recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: This optical recording medium is constituted so that a lower protective layer 2, a recording layer 3 reversibly changing phase between an amorphous phase and a crystalline phase, an upper protective layer 4, and a reflective layer 5 having the main component such as Ag are laminated in this order on a transparent substrate 1, and the upper protective layer 4 consists of ZrO<SB>2</SB>, SiO<SB>2</SB>, TiO<SB>2</SB>and X<SB>1</SB>, and the X<SB>1</SB>is at least one kind among Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, CeO, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, MgO, CaO, Nb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>and rare earth oxides.
