Molten glass is centrifugally extruded through a hollow spinner having a diameter of more than 8 inches and having at least 10,000 fibre forming orifices and then engaged by a highvelocity gaseous blast and burned into fibres, the blast being progressively constricted (see Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) downwardly between the rotor and an annular skirt. The gas may be products of combustion generated in situ. Several such rotor assemblies are disclosed (Fig. 1, not shown) fed from a common glass supply and discharging on to a common conveyor belt which conveys them to compressing rolls and to a curing oven in which binder applied to the mat is set.</p> |
