In a friction bearing composite with a metallic supporting layer, optional porous bearing layer and a lead-free sliding layer with plastics-based material forming a sliding area for a sliding partner, the sliding layer material has a PEEK (polyether ether ketone) matrix and also contains a lubricant and a hardening component, both in the form of fine particles with a D50 value of at most 500 nm. An Independent claim is also included for production of the composite material by supplying and preheating a strip forming the supporting layer, forming a strip of the sliding layer material by extrusion of the premixed and molten material, placing this on the supporting strip and bonding under pressure at 300-500 degrees C.
