The system has a dipped beam light unit(s) with off, park and drive modes, a circuit for at least switching modes and an additional light function(s) switched on automatically depending on the dipped beam light unit mode. The light function can be activated in park and drive modes and deactivated by selecting off. With the ignition off the dipped beam light unit can be switched off by the circuit when in drive mode. The system has at least one dipped beam light unit (1) operable in off, park and drive modes, a circuit (3) for at least switching the modes and at least one additional light function, a homecoming light function and/or a switching off light function. The light function can be switched on automatically by the circuit depending on the mode of the dipped beam light unit, whereby the light function can be activated in park and drive modes and deactivated by selecting off. With the ignition off and at least after the expiry of a period the dipped beam light unit can be switched off by the circuit when in drive mode. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of operating an inventive motor vehicle light system.
