<p>The invention provides a process by which 1,2,4-butane- triol can be easily produced at a low cost, namely, a process which comprises reducing one or more starting compounds selected from among malic diesters, 3-hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone and 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic esters as represented by the general formulae (Iota) in the presence of sodium borohydride in a medium into 1,2,4-butanetriol (IotaIota), wherein the sodium borohydride and the starting compound are respectively incorporated in alcohols different from each other and then subjected to the reduction: (Iota) (IotaIota) wherein R is alkyl having at most four carbon atoms.</p> |
