1,051,680. Bulk polymerization of olefins. MOBIL OIL CORPORATION. June 15, 1965 [June 15, 1964; May 6, 1965], No. 25276/65. Heading C3P. Stereoregular polymers of a ] -olefin containing 4 to 10 carbon atoms, alone or containing up to 20 mole per cent of propylene or ethylene, are made by effecting the polymerization in bulk, in the presence of a stereospecific catalyst, and sufficient monomer to maintain a solution, of the polymer in the monomer, and at a temperature between the lower cloud point and the upper cloud point of the solution. Hydrogen may be present. The catalyst used is of the Ziegler-Natta type. The polymer is recovered by conventional techniques, and also by the process described in Specification 1,051,679. The process may be effected in a continuous manner and the Specification contains flow diagrams of such processes. Exemplified polymers are polybutene, a copolymer of butene-1 and propylene, and a copolymer of butene-1 and ethylene. The catalysts used in the examples are TiCl 3 and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl, and TiCl 3 and a mixture of (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlI and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl. |
