When a structure into which an input signal IN and further its negative-phase signal XIN are inputted from outside is used, an IC for generating such a negative -phase signal XIN to the outside is needed, and two terminals for input signals are needed. A level shift circuit comprises a transistor having large characteristic variation, such as a TFT having a high threshold Vth, formed on an insulating substrate, for example a glass substrate. In this level shift circuit, a complementary generating section (11) for generating a complementary signal from a single-phase input signal IN by using a first power supply (VCC) of an amplitude voltage of a signal inputted from outside of the substrate as an operating power supply is provided. The level of the complementary signal generated by the complementary generating section (11) is shifted by a level shift section (14). As a result, it is unnecessary to input a negative-phase signal XIN from outside the substrate.
