PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive high capacity magnetic recording medium, having a high performance and high reliability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a recording layer, consisting of a ferromagnetic metal alloy containing Co and a non-magnetic chemical at least on one surface of the support, and the recording layer contains the element of face-centered cubic structure with 3.95Åor larger lattice constant and/or the element of hexagonal system with 4.1Åor larger c axis, i.e., the major axis.
