A method for monitoring the setting of a fuel tank cap in a vehicle has a permanent magnet (32) fitted into the cap via a torque limiter and with a magnetic sensor (70) outside the filler pipe. When the cap is removed from the filler pipe the magnet is in a non active position. When the cap is fitted and turned into the closed position the magnet is moved into the active position when the applied torque exceeds the setting of the torque limiter. The magnetic switch is then in the magnetic field and the magnetic circuit remains closed until the cap is opened again, and the mechanical grip holding the magnet is released.
