PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a vehicle to pass safely aside a vehicle even if an object such as a vehicle is present at an adjoining lane of an own vehicle lane. SOLUTION: It is determined whether or not a sensing target is present in an own vehicle lane in reference to a lateral distance (x) to the sensing target (a step 13). In the case that the sensing target is present in the own vehicle lane, a pass-by target relative speedΔV is set to 0 (a step 14). In the case that the sensing target is present outside the own vehicle lane, the pass-by target relative speedΔV proportional to the lateral distance (x) to the sensing target is set (a step 15). Subsequently, the pass-by target speed Vp is calculated (a step 16) in reference to the pass-by target relative speedΔV. If this pass-by target speed Vp is lower than a set speed Vs (a step 17), this pass-by target speed Vp is set as a target vehicle speed (a step 18). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
