PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing citronellal, by which the citronellal useful as a perfume, or the like, can simply, safely, and profitably be produced in a high selectivity and in a high yield without using a raw material originating from a natural product. SOLUTION: This method for producing the citronellal is characterized by isomerizing pulegone in the presence of an isomerization catalyst, collecting the produced isopulegone from the reaction product, hydrogenating the ketone site of the obtained isopulegone in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst to produce isopulegol, and further thermally decomposing the isopulegol.
