<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a picture display with excellent contrast and color tone in either a transmissive display mode or a reflective display mode. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a pair of substrates SUB1, SUB2 having a liquid crystal layer LC interposed therebetween and a color filter CF provided on the liquid crystal layer LC side of at least one substrate out of these substrates.
