PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new buffer projection shapes, resulting from giving new shapes to the ribs and projections of a buffer material, that provide the buffer material made of expanded polyethylene or expanded polyolefin with a high buffer capability in solving the problem that a buffer material made of soft urethane is used in many cases for transporting light precision instruments or components on the ground that some of them are so easy to break that a buffer material made of expanded polyethylene or expanded polyolefin cannot give a proper protection to the packaged instruments or components. SOLUTION: Forming long projections on a buffer material results in an increased amount of its displacement, improving its buffer capability, but also causing the buffer material to be bent by the weight of an object, thus eventually impairing its buffer capability. In achieving a high buffer capability by eliminating the above disadvantage, the buffer material is formed into a shape that the area of sections perpendicular to applied stress is changed consecutively or step by step and the change is repeated at least more than two times.
