The exhaust pipe (39) is monitored by a captor (31) and the result is used with other engine data to determine the make up of the fuel being used. The fuel data is used by a microprocessor (101) and software (100,102) to select an engine operating card which will give the best possible output for the type of fuel being used and the current engine parameters such as speed, pressures and temperatures.
