A control unit (5) detects a fault in an exhaust gas sensor (17) by using the results of a comparison. Different conditions include one condition, in which an element's temperature is kept at a higher level, and one condition, in which the element's temperature is kept at a lower level. This temperature can be controlled by a pattern controlling the allocation of reactions. An Independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a fault in an exhaust gas sensor.
