PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove carbon monoxide from a reformed gas without fail.

SOLUTION: A reformed gas passage 4 is connected with the reformed gas exit of a reformer 1 which reforms a hydrocarbon to form a reformed gas. A carbon monoxide adsorbent 5a which adsorbs carbon monoxide from the influent reformed gas is disposed in the passage 4. An oxidizing agent feeder 6 for feeding an oxidizing agent into the adsorbent 5a is disposed in that part of the passage 4 which is upstream of the adsorbent 5a. The carbon monoxide level in the adsorbent is determined. When the determined carbon monoxide level exceeds a tolerance, the oxidizing agent is fed into the adsorbent 5a in order to oxidize the carbon monoxide adsorbed on the adsorbent 5a to thereby lower the carbon monoxide level in the adsorbent 5a.
