<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an abnormal part with a simple method when abnormality occurs in a fuel system. <P>SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine is operated in a plurality of operational conditions with different discharge amount of a fuel pump per hour to detect the pressure difference between the fuel pressure supplied to a fuel injection valve and the pressure which should be pressurized with a fuel pump. When the detected pressure difference decreases as the fuel discharge amount per hour increases, it is determined that a fuel leakage has occurred downstream of the pump. Since the amount of the fuel leakage is almost constant per hour at the time of leak occurrence, the influence by the leakage becomes relatively smaller with a increase in the discharge amount of the pump, so that the leakage downstream of the pump can be detected.
