A laminated electrolyte membrane has at least (A) a sheet material doped with mineral acid(s) and (B) barrier layer(s) covering one or both sides of (A). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a membrane electrode unit with at least one of these laminated electrolyte membranes sandwiched between 2 electrodes; (2) electrodes coated with a 10-30 micronsm thick layer of a cation exchange material preferably used for layer (B); (3) electrodes coated with a layer of this material less than 10 micronsm thick; (4) a fuel cell system containing several different or similar membrane electrode units, at least one of which contains the laminated electrolyte membrane.
