A carbon dioxide gas laser which operates at atmospheric pressure or above and therefore does not require vacuum pumping equipment comprises a chamber 10 into which the CO 2 gas is introduced through an inlet 12, Fig. 1. The gas may contain a proportion of helium and nitrogen. The rear wall 21 of the chamber is formed as a curved mirror and the opposite wall is formed by a mirror 19 having a slot 20 through which a coherent beam of radiation is emitted when electrical discharges take place between a series of electrodes 14 and a common electrode 13 connected to a H.V. pulser 11. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 5, 6 the electrode 13 comprises a perforated tube to serve as the gas inlet and the mirror 19 has three arcuate slots 20 in a resonator utilizing a concave annular mirror 21.</p> |
