PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform whereby a rare earth element can be added to the preform uniformly in the longitudinal direction. SOLUTION: The method for producing the rare earth element-added optical fiber preform comprises the first step of forming a glass particulate deposit layer on the inner surface of a quartz glass pipe by a gas phase reaction, the second step of depositing the vapor of a rare earth element on the glass particulate deposit layer by resistance heating, the third step of forming a composite glass pipe by thermally transparentizing the glass particulate deposit layer, and the fourth step of making the inside of the composite glass pipe compact.
