A method for marking an securing buoys has the buoy lines fitted with coloured shapes, coloured sleeves etc. for rapid identification of separate buoys. This enables boats to be rapidly secured to selected buoys, it also enables special areas to be marked, e.g. fish farming nets. The shape and colour of the fittings can be selected to deter marine animals, e.g. seals, dolphins etc. from running into netted areas.
