A magnetic recording medium is constructed to include an intermediate layer made of a ferromagnetic material, a nonmagnetic coupling layer provided on the intermediate layer, and a magnetic layer provided on the nonmagnetic coupling layer, and the intermediate layer reverses magnetization independently of the magnetic layer and functions as a ferrimagnetic coupling layer such that a magnetization direction of the intermediate layer is antiparallel to that of the magnetic layer in a state where no magnetic field is applied thereto. <IMAGE>
