<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent material having a peak wave length of an excitation spectrum within a wave length region of 350-500 nm, and suitable for a white LED emitting yellow light, and to provide the white LED using the fluorescent material. <P>SOLUTION: The fluorescent material for the white LED comprises a silicate fluorescent material. The silicate fluorescent material contains a compound represented by the composition formula: mM<SP>1</SP>O-nM<SP>2</SP>O-2SiO<SB>2</SB>(wherein, M<SP>1</SP>is one or more kinds selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sr and Ba; M<SP>2</SP>is one or more kinds selected from the group consisting of Mg and Zn; m is within the range of 0.5-2.5; and n is within the range of 0.5-2.5), and one or more kinds selected from the group consisting of Eu and Dy as an activator.
