PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-chain type hydrophilic carbodiimide compound curable at a comparatively low temperature, and usable as a curing agent of a water-based coating composition having excellent characteristics such as water resistance, and to provide the water-based coating composition comprising the compound. SOLUTION: The three-chain type hydrophilic carbodiimide compound is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, X is a divalent organic group having at least one carbodiimide group; Y is a hydrophilic group; R1is a≤4C alkylene group; n is 0 or 1; and m is a number of 1-10).
