PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the power consumption of a modem by controlling the deactivation of the modem based on a call type. SOLUTION: A telematics control unit (TCU), installed in a vehicle, communicates with a service provider through a cellular communication network. The service provider sends a message which triggers the TCU to place a maintenance call to the service provider. During the maintenance call messaging, the TCU identifies a call type of the maintenance call. The TCU will have stored in advance an allowed execution time for that call type in accordance with maintenance call types. The TCU sets a call timer to the allowed execution time for the call type. When the allowed execution time has elapsed, the connection will be cut off and the modem will be turned off, regardless of whether the maintenance call is completed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
