PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type high density magnetic recording medium which has the satisfactory surface property, has the excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic particularly in a shorter wavelength region and has the high reliability. SOLUTION: The average major axis length L of ferromagnetic alloy powder which is contained as a main component together with a binder in a magnetic layer formed on at least one side surface of a non-magnetic supporting body is less than 0.10μm, the ferromagnetic alloy powder contains Co by 15-28 at.% with respect to Fe and contains Y by≥22μmol/m<SP>2</SP>with respect to the specific surface area Sc calculated by the average major axis L and the crystallite diameter d.
