PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower a magnetic recording error rate of a high-density magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The surface of a magnetic layer 50 of a magnetic recording tape 18 or an under-coating layer 42 on the lower side thereof is measured by an atomic force microscope using a probe 12 of a specified value or below in the radius of curvature of its front end and is so managed that the arithmetic mean deviation of profile on the surface of the magnetic layer 50 and/or the under-coating layer 42 attains the specified value or below.
