To achieve an increased service life of organic, electro-optical elements, the invention provides a process for producing them which comprises the steps of: providing a substrate (<bold>3</highlight>), applying a first conductive layer (<bold>13</highlight>), applying at least one layer (<bold>15</highlight>) which includes at least one organic, electro-optical material, applying a second conductive layer (<bold>17</highlight>), and the step of depositing at least one layer (<bold>7, 71, 72, . . . , 7</highlight>N) with a vitreous structure.
