PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain image data faithful to an original by making the optical path length between the end parts and center part of a carriage uniform by preventing the carriage from curving by increasing the rigidity of the carriage by incorporating metal plates for reinforcement in the carriage in which an optical unit of an image reader is built. SOLUTION: A 1st recessed part 5f and a 2nd recessed part 5g are formed in parts of the carriage 5 and the metal plates 51a and 53a for reinforcement are put in the recessed parts 5f and 5g and fixed to the carriage 5. When the carriage is to curve, the metal plates 51a and 53a for reinforcement resist to stop the carriage 5 from curving. The carriage 5 is formed of a flexible raw material such as a synthetic resin in which no reinforcing material is mixed and the shape of the carriage 5 is made to conform with the metal plates 51a and 53a for reinforcement, thereby securing the flatness of the carriage 5.
