PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a closed deck type cylinder block with superior sealability between a gasket and a deck face, and also to provide its manufacturing method wherein sufficient mechanical coupling strength is provided even by welding in manufacture of a closed deck type cylinder block. SOLUTION: The closed deck type cylinder block is manufactured by positioning a blocking member 1 on an upper end opening 2j of a water jacket 2b formed on a closed deck type cylinder block body 2 and welding the blocking member 1 to the cylinder block body 2. It is characterized by that an abutting face 1a of the blocking member 1 to the cylinder block body 2 is tapered, an abutting part 2a of the water jacket 2b to the blocking member 1 in the upper end opening 2j is tapered, and the abutting face 1a and the abutting part 2a are welded.
