PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a printer or the like which detects the presence/absence of discharging ink from many ink discharge parts with the use of a small inspection pattern. SOLUTION: The printer has the ink discharge parts, a light emitting part for emitting light to a printing medium, and a light receiving part which detects the presence/absence of discharging ink on the basis of light received by the light receiving part. Each of the plurality of ink discharge parts can form an inspection printing block adjacent to the printing medium by discharging ink, and each inspection printing block is smaller than a region where the printing medium is illuminated with the light emitted by the light emitting part.
