<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the conversion of image information in a structured document into a text and to facilitate the reuse for such as retrieval or editing of the resulting data by giving an attribute name to the data converted into the text. <P>SOLUTION: Data including image information such as facsimile data received by a facsimile server 6 is converted into a structured document, and the image information in the structured document is converted to text data by character recognition. In the conversion into text data, the range to be character- recognized is designated, and an attribute is inputted to the recognized text data.
