[Class 144 (i).] The bolt holes for use in attaching a wheel having a hollow metal hub are formed by tubes each having a seat for a nut &c. arranged within the body of the hub. The invention is shown applied to wheels formed from two metal stampings welded together in the mid-plane of the wheel. As shown in Fig. 2, the metal of the stampings 12, 13 is offset at 15, 14 around the bolt holes and formed with two facing flanges 16 in different diameters. Tubes 17, each having a flared portion 18 between its ends, are welded to the flanges 16, and these tubes may be reinforced by shorter tubes 19<1> having correspondingly flared end portions 20. The flared , portions form seats for the nuts 23, the construction permitting artillery wheel hubs to be fitted over short bolts 22 such as are used with the hubs of disc and wire wheels. In a modification, the tube 17 may be formed with a thickened flared portion instead of using a reinforcing sleeve 19<1>. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the flanges 16 are connected by plain tubes 25 each having a spherical seat 271 for the nut 30. Fig. 10 shows a further modification in which the hub portions 31, 32 of both wheel stampings are outwardly offset and then inwardly flanged to receive mating flanges on the tubes 35. |
