PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost one-stage optical isolator having small coupling loss in the forward direction and satisfactory isolation characteristics in the opposite direction. SOLUTION: In the optical isolator, at least a first birefringence polarizing element, a 45-degree Faraday rotator, a first half-wave plate, a second half-wave plate, and a second birefringence polarizing element are arranged in this order. The first and second half-wave plates rotate a polarization plane of signal light by a total of 45 degrees reciprocally while offsetting the wavelength dispersion of retardation.
