PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine capable of restricting occurrence of mis-ignition to fuel-air mixture by generation of spark discharge at the spark plug upon energization to a primary winding, generating and detecting ion current between electrodes of a spark plug, and preventing increase of processing load of an ECU. SOLUTION: This ignition device 1 for an internal combustion engine is provided with a backflow-preventive diode 31 for preventing generation of spark discharge upon energization to the primary winding 33, and restricting mis-ignition. An ion current detecting circuit 41 applies ion current detecting voltage of the same polarity as high voltage for ignition to the spark plug 13, generation and detection of ion current can be conducted even in case the backflow-preventive diode 31 is provided. Since a switching drive means 101 to control an ion current detecting switch 43 is further provided, favorable generation and detection of ion current can be conducted without increasing load of the ECU.
