Production of 6C alkenes from a 4C-alkene containing hydrocarbon stream comprises contacting with a metathesis catalyst comprising a Group VIb, VIIb or VIII element whereby at least a portion of the 4C alkene is converted to a 2-6C alkene and the 2-6C alkene stream is separated from the metathesis catalyst and distilled. A process for the production of 6C alkenes from a 4C-alkene containing hydrocarbon stream comprises: (a) contact of the 4C-alkene stream with a metathesis catalyst comprising a Group VIb, VIIb or VIII element whereby at least a portion of the 4C alkene is converted to a 2-6C alkene and the 2-6C alkene stream is separated from the metathesis catalyst; (b) distillation of ethylene from the 2-6C stream to yield a 3-6C alkene stream; (c) distillation of the 3-6C stream to yield a propylene stream, a 6C stream, a 4C stream, a 5C stream and/or a 4-5C stream; and (d) recycling of at least a portion of the 4C, 5C and/or 4-5C stream.
