PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a commodity storage installation allowing the storage of commodities different in depth, shortening a transfer time and improving working efficiency. SOLUTION: When the commodities F different in length (depth) in the direction of transfer to a commodity storage portion D are transferred to the commodity storage portion D by using a fork device 5, the move-in/-out of the fork device 5 is controlled so that the move-in/-out distance of a running fork 24 of the fork device 5 is minimized, that is, the ends on the side of a stacker crane C of the commodities F correspond to the end on the side of the stacker crane C of the commodity storage portion D. In this construction, the move-in/- out distance of the running fork 24 is minimized and so the transfer time for the commodities F is minimized, improving the working efficiency.
