A movable radiation head (MRH) (10) directs rays (12,18) to give treatment onto an area (14) of tissue to be treated. A holding device (24) for a distance-measurement device (DMD) (26) fits on the MRH at a defined distance from a beam. At a measurement point for a laser beam (28), the DMD is directed on the skin (16) at a point of penetration (20) and measures the distance from that point.
