PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve small size, increase of output, and increase of allowable lamp current in the igniter of a discharge lamp. SOLUTION: This igniter comprises a primary step-up transformer 1, a diode 2 that carries out half-wave rectification of the pulse voltage boosted by the primary step-up transformer 1, a capacitor 3 that is charged by the voltage half-wave rectified, a discharge gap 4 that discharges by the voltage between the terminals of the capacitor 3, and a secondary step-up transformer 5 that is supplied with a pulse voltage generated by the discharge of the discharge gap 4.
