Exhaust gas (4) is supplied in alternation to the front- (6) and rear- (7) sides of the filter body for purification. Filter channel (10) ends (6a, 6b, 7a, 7b) are permanently closed and open in alternation, throughout the filter body. Exhaust gases to be purified are supplied in alternation to opposite sides (6, 7). The filter body enables reversible flow through its filter channels (10) from and to the side casings. These have an inlet- (E) and an outlet- (A) channel, with inlet flow diversion to either of the side sections (6, 7), and corresponding outlet flow diversion. The inlet and outlet channels (E, A) are themselves branched (E1, E2; A1, A2) accordingly. Valves or dampers (8, 9) steer forward and reverse flows through the filter. The filter channels comprise ceramic material, and are catalytically-coated internally, to reduce the soot ignition temperature. The filter channels have heating elements. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of loading and regeneration of the above soot filter.
