<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type optical switch which can be operated at high speed because having no mechanical movable sections and has high reliability and is miniaturized by reduction of the number of parts. <P>SOLUTION: In the reflection type optical switch, an input/output port part 12 having a plurality of fibers 10, a polarized light separating and synthesizing means 30 which separates light having orthogonal polarization directions in the same optical path and synthesizes light in different optical paths, a Farady rotation angle switching means 32, a polarization rotating means 34 which converts polarization directions of light in different optical paths from orthogonal directions to parallel directions or from parallel directions to orthogonal directions, an optical path controlling double refraction element 36 which controls optical path shift in accordance with a polarization direction, and a polarization rotating reflection means 38 which rotates a polarization direction at 90°back and forth are arranged along an optical axis. The Farady rotation angle switching means has a Farady element 44 and an electromagnet 32 for controlling±45°switching of the polarization direction of light passing the Farady element 44. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
