PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably provide a liquid crystal display device of a vertical alignment mode wherein contrast viewed from an oblique direction can be highly maintained. SOLUTION: A positive uniaxial film 14 having Rp [nm] retardation in the planar direction is disposed between a liquid crystal cell 11 of a vertical alignment mode and a polarizing plate 12, and a negative uniaxial film 15 having Rn [nm] retardation in the thickness direction is disposed between the liquid crystal cell 11 and a polarizing plate 13. When each retardation value in the thickness direction of triacetyl cellulose films 12b and 13b of the polarizing plates 12 and 13 is defined as Rtac [nm] and a parameterα1 [nm] concerned with Rp and a parameterβ1 [nm] concerned with Rn are defined asα1=135-0.7×Rtac andβ1=Rlc-65-1.4×Rtac, respectively, Rp and Rn are set to more than 90% and less than 110% based onα1 andβ1, respectively.
