PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reader and a copying machine or a compound machine using the same in which focusing can be performed by smoothly moving a lens without using a complicated tool even in the state of mounting a shield cover. SOLUTION: A shield cover 208 for shielding external light except for output light from a lens 206 for converging reflected light from an original from being incident to an optic/electric converting means 207 for converting the output light from the lens 206 to an electric signal is located between the lens 206 and the optic/electric converting means 207, and the shield cover 208 has a height lower than the height of the lens 206, not to disturb an optical path through the lens 206 and not to cover the upper surface of the lens 206 on the side of the optic/electric converting means 207.
