PURPOSE: A defect management method of an optical recorder is provided to arrange substitution blocks recorded to a substitution area of an optical disc according to the user data sequence instead of defect blocks generated in a data area of the disc. CONSTITUTION: A defect management method of an optical recorder includes the steps of checking the arrangement state of substitution blocks(sa1-sa4) recorded to a substitution area by substitution recording information for defect management read from an optical disc loaded to the optical recorder, and arranging the substitution blocks in sequence to record to the substitution area if the checked arrangement state is not sequential. The arrangement state is checked in the idle time without any interference of a host.
