PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely obtain a true cylinder pressure. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with a cylinder pressure sensor 15 for outputting an output value according to the cylinder pressure, and a calculation means for calculating the cylinder pressure based on an output value of the cylinder pressure sensor and a relationship for converting the output value into the cylinder pressure. A valve opening of an intake valve 4 is variable by a required engine operating condition. A pressure sensor detecting the pressure in an intake passage 11 is attached to the intake passage upstream of the intake valve. When the opening of the intake valve is a maximum valve opening and an intake stoke reaches an intake bottom dead center, a correcting coefficient for correcting the cylinder pressure value calculated by the cylinder pressure detecting means to a true pressure value is calculated based on an offset between the cylinder pressure value calculated by the calculation means and a pressure value detected by the pressure sensor. The cylinder pressure value calculated by the calculation means is corrected with the correcting coefficient so as to obtain a true pressure in the cylinder. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
