The invention relates to a method and device for controlling a capacitive load by charging or discharging the load using a load current which is allowed to oscillate between a maximum default (Ithpos) and a minimum default (Ithneg). During the charging process, the maximum default (Ithpos) increases monotonously in a first step (a), remains substantially constant in a second step (b) and decreases monotonously in a third step (c). During a discharging process, the minimum default (Ithneg) decreases monotonously in a first step (a), remains substantially constant in a second step (b) and increases monotonously in a third step (c). For adjusting a desired degree of charge, a variable temporal overlap (tth) of the third step (c) of the charging process and the first step (a) of the subsequent discharging step is provided, thereby allowing for a high resolution and reproducibility of the control.
