A catalyst for the polymerization of an olefin, which is formed from a solid catalyst component for the polymerization of an olefin obtained by contacting a solid component (a) containing magnesium, titanium, a halogen and an electron-donating compound with an organosilicon compound, an organosilicon compound (b) represented by [CH2=CH-(CH 2)n]qSiR34-q and an organoaluminum compound, or obtained by contacting a magnesium compound, two types of titanium compound, an electron-donating compound and an organosilicon compound, and (B) an organoaluminum compound; and a method for producing a polymer or a copolymer of an olefin which is carried out in the presence of said catalyst. The above method allows the production of a polymer or a copolymer of an olefin having high stereospecificity with good yield and also allows the polymerization exhibiting good response to the addition of hydrogen and thus the production of a polymer or a copolymer having a broad molecular weight distribution.
