PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape device in which the possibility of overwriting a recording block is completely eliminated, the reproduction and restoration ability of the data of the recording block is improved and a reproduction margin is improved. SOLUTION: In the case that an ARA level burst 45 can not be normally read, the ARA level burst 45 is reproduced to the terminating point 45e of the ARA level burst 45 by the forward direction traveling of a magnetic tape medium 40, the all '1' pattern is overwritten on the ARA level burst 45 by the reverse direction traveling 16 of the magnetic tape medium 40 from the terminating point 45e of the ARA level burst 45, the ARA level burst 45 is read again, and a read amplification gain is set.
